The taxpayer advocate will ensure that the rights afforded to the taxpayer in the Taxpayer Bill of Rights are protected.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What the taxpayer advocate can do:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide assistance to those who have tried to operate within the normal Departmental channels;<\/li>\n<li>Coordinate communications between you and the department;<\/li>\n<li>Ensure your rights under the Taxpayer Bill of Rights are being upheld;<\/li>\n<li>Advocate for a resolution of your issue on your behalf;<\/li>\n<li>Identify systemic problems; and<\/li>\n<li>Recommend long-term solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What the taxpayer advocate cannot do:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide relief or remedy not provided by law;<\/li>\n<li>Act as the first contact with the department;<\/li>\n<li>Reverse decisions made by the Administrative Hearing Office; and<\/li>\n<li>Handle issues at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
