New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department Welcomes Demesia Padilla as the New Cabinet Secretary

Governor Susana Martinez has appointed Demesia Padilla to serve as the Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department.

A native New Mexican raised in Albuquerque’s South Valley, Ms. Padilla is a certified public accountant with nearly three decades of experience in both private and public sectors. Ms. Padilla attended Rio Grande High School and graduated from the University of New Mexico Anderson School of Management with distinction.

In appointing Ms. Padilla, Governor Martinez said, ""I selected Ms. Padilla because she is a professional administrator, one who understands how New Mexico tax code affects businesses, families and certainly the parents that live in New Mexico."

Governor Martinez further added, "Together, Ms. Padilla and I will promote reforms to our tax code to make it more understandable, business-friendly and fair. And as overseer of New Mexico's motor vehicle department, I have made it a priority for Ms. Padilla to develop a bill that will revoke the driver's licenses that have been issued thus far to illegal immigrants, as well as to change the law to no longer issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants."

“I want to thank Governor Martinez for this opportunity to serve the people of New Mexico,” Ms. Padilla said. “I am honored and humbled by this awesome responsibility.

“As a consumer and as a taxpayer, I understand New Mexico's tax code and the roadblocks that businesses and families often face," Ms. Padilla said. “I will work toward removing those roadblocks so we could make our tax code more friendly to businesses and families, and improve overall economic climate in our state.”

Ms. Padilla is a licensed certified public accountant in the states of Nevada and New Mexico.  In 1985 she began her accounting career with a national accounting firm in Las Vegas, Nevada. Prior to starting her accounting firm, she was an Internal Revenue Service Agent in the Albuquerque office.

Ms. Padilla is an active member in her community and church serving on numerous boards and committees.  Currently she is the chairperson for the Bernalillo County Audit Committee.  She also served in the position of a certified public accountant on the New Mexico Gaming Control Board for three years.
